Dansen
Actually, if you don’t mind we’d like to-(cont)

FRED
Get a warrant or talk to my lawyer. Take him away.
Fred goes back inside and slams the door.

Dansen
(cont)
Ask you a few questions.

Smirk
Guess family isn’t what it used to be.

Dansen
Well, you’ve got to admit, if you had a brother that dressed up in underwear and tossed grenades at people you wouldn’t exactly want them hanging around.

Smirk
Family is family. Blood is thicker than anything else.
INT. DINING ROOM – NIGHT

Fred is inside watching. Fred frowns.

EXT. FRED’S HOUSE - NIGHT

Dansen
Even the law?

Smirk
Yup. Even the law.

Dansen
Some cop you are. Come on, let’s get out of here. You’re being awfully quiet there Captain Cosmos

Smirk
We have your brother with us.
Fred opens the door.

Dansen
Public record listed Dr. Noble being released to your temporary custody several months ago, and we just wanted to see if you had some sort of on-going counseling.

Frank
Fred, I-don’t know what’s going on. I’ve-something happened to me.

Fred looks shocked for a moment. He looks Frank up and down. He starts looking angry and then spontaneously rushes forward and punches Frank.

Dansen
Whoa! Hold on there!

Smirk
That wasn’t exactly the reaction I was expecting.

Frank
What-why?

FRED
I saw the whole thing on the news Frank. How DARE you bring this sort of thing to my front door! I’ve got children.

Frank
It’s not exactly like I had a choice, I’m barely remembering who I am.

FRED
Yes, Frank-you did have a choice. Go away.

FRANK
A crime you say?

OLD MAN
Oh yes! Being committed by the Forces of Evil!

FRANK
THE FORCES OF EVIL?!

DANSEN
Those are the guys, yeah.

FRANK
(puts on his mask)
THEN LET US DEPART!

Frank charges out of the bank at a full out run. Dansen and Smirk slowly start to follow, obviously in no particular hurry.

DANSEN
Sad.

BANK TELLER
This happens a lot?

SMIRK
Way too much.

EXT. FRED’S HOUSE - NIGHT

Outside a small house, normal looking yard with a white picket fence. Frank, Dansen and Smirk walk up to the door. Dansen knocks.

Fred
(through the door)
Hello?

Dansen
Yes, are you FRED Noble?

Fred
Yes, that’s correct. What’s the matter officer?

FRANK
Listen-you don’t understand. I don’t get a lot of this, but I know something bad is happening.

DANSEN
Oh yes, a lot of bad stuff is happening all over the place.

FRANK
I’ve got to stop it!

DANSEN
And what would that be?

FRANK
I can’t. I’m having trouble remembering, It was Dr. Shadows!

SMIRK
You mean the super hero who’s been dead for 30 years?

FRANK
But I just saw him!

SMIRK
Oh really? Wait, you’re a super hero right?

DANSEN
Huh?
(looks at Smirk)

SMIRK
(Looking back at Dansen)
Bear with me here.

FRANK
No. I mean yes. I was but I’m not really a super hero.

SMIRK
That’s a shame, because there’s this crime we need help solving.

SMIRK
Ok, maybe he’s not so fine.

OLD MAN
Do you think those are real live hand grenades he’s carrying?

DANSEN
I don’t know, but I’m not taking any chances…(walks toward Frank) Excuse me-(cont)

FRANK
Huh?

DANSEN
(cont)
Mr..er…?

FRANK
Frank, Grenademan…GrenadeFrank

SMIRK
Right Mr. GrenadeFrank, we’re going to have to take you in.

FRANK
NO! Not back there! They locked me away!

DANSEN
Locked you away eh? As in the nuthouse?

FRANK
That’s right! After they tampered with my mind!

SMIRK
Well-we’ll just take you for a nice relaxing drive then, how does that sound?

OLD MAN
You know, I’ve been going to this bank all my life, and its been robbed 47 times while I’ve been here. Seen a lot of super heroes come and go, but sometimes they get into that mode.

FRANK
I-what the crap am I wearing?

BANK TELLER
Mode?

OLD MAN
Yeah, that glazed look in their eyes. The kind they get sometimes when they speak about their thoughts as if they were speaking to some kind of audience.

Bank Teller and Old Man briefly look at the screen a moment.

FRANK
It’s all coming back! I’m Grenademan. No, I’m Frank Noble-except that by night I’m Grenademan, whose secret identity is…

Dansen and Smirk Enter walk into the bank.

Dansen
Someone call in about a lunatic with a hand grenade?

BANK TELLER
That’d be me officer.

SMIRK
Oh, it’s him…he’s the guy we found over at Inoria and Queen’s place earlier. He’s fine.

FRANK
WHO AM I? I AM NOT A SUPERHERO!

Tuesday, December 9, 2014

[Script] Tossing Grenades at Windmills - Page 40

BANK TELLER
It’s a crime to go walking around with Hand Grenades…

OLD MAN
What if he uses one of them?

Frank walks around the bank, alone, speaking to himself.

FRANK
I-remember this place and yet I don’t. It all feels so strange. It’s like it was some sort of amnesia. The last thing I remember was the lab, and then being kidnapped and then-
(pauses)

OLD MAN
He’s muttering to himself

BANK TELLER
That’s not a good sign.

OLD MAN
Think we should call the cops?

FRANK
They tortured me…can’t let them get it. Can’t let them get into my mind!

BANK TELLER
Oh yeah. Very bad sign there.
(picks up the phone to call the police)

FRANK
Can’t let them get the formula. Reflexium. It’s all. It’s all like a dream.

OLD MAN
You know, I’ve been going to this bank all my life, and its been robbed 47 times while I’ve been here. Seen a lot of super heroes come and go, but sometimes they get into that mode.

Frank leaves, shaking his head.

INT. BANK – DAY (LATE)

At the bank again, Frank Noble in costume, without the mask, garnering bizarre looks from the patrons.

Old MAN
Say ain’t there that there super hero that clocked me upside the head?

BANK Teller
Yes, that certainly does seem to be him.

Old MAN
Dangerous to society. A menace. Out to be locked up.

Bank TELLER
I don’t know, I make it a policy to avoid arguments with people that have an inordinate amount of explosives on their person.

Old MAN
You have a good point there. Problems like that usually take care of themselves….as in sending themselves to the afterlife very shortly.
Bank TELLER
Think I should call the police?

OLD MAN
No, there’s no crime in being a super hero…

Dansen
What, now you’re some kind of political expert?

Frank
Er…right. Will you be needing me here any longer?

Smirk
We might need you to make a statement later, but since you seem to be fine-and a friend of Hawkqueen’s, I don’t see any reason why not. Captain generally doesn’t like us messing around with Superheroes.

Frank
How do you know I’m not a super villian?

Dansen
Villains tend to have less ridiculous costumes.

Frank
er….right.

Smirk
Most defiantly, bad guys almost always have a better sense of style. Though I have to say Hawkqueen is quite a babe.  Inoria is a bit young for my taste though.

Dansen
Oh, I agree with you there. It’s usually the males that have a total lack of fashion sense, like Captain Hammer…it’s not like he NEEDS to have those hammers glued to his cape, I mean they don’t actually DO anything.

That’s not the way it looks.

Dansen
Doesn’t matter.

Smirk
Well it should.

Dansen
I’ll be sure to alert the American Vocabulary Association.

Frank
Excuse me.

Smirk
Yeah?

Frank
How exactly did I get here?

Dansen
Not entirely sure. We found you after we got a silent alarm back at the station. We’ve got a permanent arrangement with Hawkqueen and Inoria….not that we can usually do much to whatever is messing around with their headquarters, but we like to at least say we made the attempt.

Smirk
I’ll say-Metahuman detail is humiliating. I can’t remember the number of times I’ve told rookies to stop shooting after the first bullet….I mean, for crying out loud, if the bullets are bouncing off a guy-what’s the point of wasting ammunition at legitimate tax payer expense.

DOC SHADOWS
(as Inoria, relieved)
Thankyou. I think it is something new, some kind of compound that reflects energy. We need to enter it to open the door and disable their device.

GRENADEMAN
AHA! I have it!

Grenademan goes over to the non existent pad and enters the formula for Reflexium into it. Doc Shadows watches and learns. Doc Shadows then goes to right beside Grenademan and touches his neck like he did Inoria.

DOC SHADOWS
Sleep well friend. I am truly sorry for this. Perhaps I can repair some of the damage I have done before you wake up.

INT. HAWK EYRE. – DAY

Dansen
Hey, you ok?

Frank
Um…yes, I think I passed out. I feel odd.

Smirk
Not surprised. Took quite a bump on the forehead.

Frank
Where am I?

Dansen
The Hawk Queen’s Eyre.

Smirk
Ire.

Dansen
No, it’s pronounced Eyre.

HAWKQUEEN
There he is! Get him!

DOC SHADOWS
(as Hawkqueen)
There he is! Get him!

Inoria takes out a whip and slings it out at Hawkqueen, shocking her into unconciousness, caught totally by surprise from behind. Grenademan tosses a smoke grenade. Doc Shadows rushes up toward Inoria, touching the side of her neck. She immediately falls unconscious. Doc Shadows moves through the smoke to appear as Inoria.

DOC SHADOWS
(as Inoria)
Fr…I mean Grenademan, we have found the door, but we’re having trouble getting inside….

Doc Shadows leads Grenademan up to a blank wall, which to Grenademan appears to be an impressive high tech door.

DOC SHADOWS
(as Inoria)
We’re having trouble getting inside. The Forces of Evil have blocked the door. Only the right chemical formula will let us inside.

GRENADEMAN
Why don’t I just blow it up?

DOC SHADOWS
(as Inoria, alarmed)
No, I don’t think that would be a good idea. Its hooked to a Cesium generator. Innocents might be hurt.

GRENADEMAN
Excellent point. What formula do you think it is?

[The 500] Eating the Seed Corn

The crescent wrench was polished with the sweat and tears of the protesters Wa had beaten. He had not done this lightly. His family needed to eat. His grandfather needed medicine. Who were they to accuse him of being an agent of Tyranny?
His father had protested the British when they had left the ‘democratic’ government in place that the mainland was now so ruthlessly exploiting. His grandfather had been on of the earliest architects of the movement for democracy, but the business community had remembered the Shu family’s leanings when the British had been power and slowly business had tapered to nothing.
The family had fallen from grace.
Now his muscled back pounded the concrete barricade the democratic protesters had set up. Each time he put down his wrench chips spun out in a tiny gray galaxy of boring stars. The other ‘agitators’ were putting their first and kicking at the blockade. The police had given up three days ago, and everyone knew it was a matter of time before the troops marched in and shot the protesters.
But it was still taking too long.
So Wa was doing their work for them. Yes, democracy was important. Yes, freedom was important. Freedom would not feed his family. He saw one naive and desperate young woman interpose herself between his wrench and the concrete block which was toppling back and forth from all the bodies pressing against it. Wa brought down his wrench.
He had meant to only hit her on the shoulder, but the idiot put her head in the way. He heard a sickening crunch. He could just drop her here, and in the chaos no one would know the wiser. He took no chances and began to drag the woman out of the crowd, which was no easy task. The bodies pressed against him, the blood flowing from the unconscious woman’s temple.
Did she have brain damage?
It seemed like forever. He had to kick at least two people who got in his way. Where was his wrench now? Eventually, wading through the swamp of humanity, he reached an ambulance. He told the cops that the woman had been wounded. And they loaded her up and took her away.
Then they arrested him. How could they know? But then he realized when he looked around at the protesters in the van with him, haggard faces with eyes all puffed up from pepper spray. These were the democratic idiots. Wa couldn’t help but laugh at the irony.
The universe was cruel and strange.

J.R.R. THORNE
We can't let them interfere with the device.

DOC SHADOWS
Interesting.

J.R.R. THORNE
What?

DOC SHADOWS
Ironically, I think this disaster might have given me an idea. I'm amazed I didn't think of it before.

J.R.R. THORNE
What?

DOC SHADOWS
You don't want to know.

J.R.R. THORNE
Why?

DOC SHADOWS
Because I said so.

J.R.R. THORNE
WHAT?!

Doc Shadows uses his telepathic abilities to vanish from Thorne's sight. We see from Thorne's perspective that Shadows seems to step into the shadows and become invisible.

J.R.R. THORNE
Come back here! What are you doing?

DOC SHADOWS
(invisible)
I’m solving our problem.

EXT. KENSIGNTON RESEARCH FACILITY - DAY

GRENADEMAN
FORTHWITH VILLIAN! I SHALL HAVE AT THEE!

HENCHMAN
Whatever.

The henchman takes out a knife and tosses it at Grenademan. The knife bounces off of his helmet. Inoria shoots a taser like stun bolt at the thug and then turns to Grenademan.

INORIA
Please try to stay in sight.

GRENADEMAN
WE'RE NEARLY THERE.

HAWKQUEEN
Stay near me.

They move into the warehouse and spot a bizarre looking device with a large projector of some kind on one end, attached to a power source. The projector is obviously designed to bounce back and reflect off of something.

INORIA
What is that?
(Moves closer)

GRENADEMAN
A DEVICE OF THE FORCES OF EVIL!

Grenademan tosses a sleep gas grenade at a third group of henchmen who show up but who all fall asleep.

HAWKQUEEN
Yes. We knew that. Thank you.

INT. CONTROL ROOM - DAY

Doc Shadows and Thorne are looking in a control room looking at various cameras that show the heroes near the device.

HAWKQUEEN
I can see through the eyes of the hawks. We need to head north.

INORIA
North it is then.

Inoria grabs Grenademan by the hand and pulls him north. She knocks out two remaining henchman and follows Hawkqueen's lead inside of the smoke. They move beyond the smoke.

The closer they come to a large warehouse, the faster they run. When they are almost there, another wave of henchmen comes out, branching clubs.

INORIA
Hey, they're learning. No guns this time.

HAWKQUEEN
If they were really learning, would they work for someone like Thorne in the first place?

INORIA
Good point.

GRENADEMAN
TALLYHO!

Grenademan single handedly charges them, tossing several grenades. Smoke, paint and oil cover the ground, covering many of the assailants. None of them immediately come out of the smoke. Grenademan vanishes inside it as well.

HAWKQUEEN
Where did he go?

INORIA
There he is!

Grenademan emerges from the smoke looking triumphant as another thug comes out after him, shooting a gun in his direction that he ignores initially. He starts to turn around while a hawk attacks the henchman, forcing him to drop the gun to the ground. The hawk moves into the smoke.

Grenademan Vs Zombies is now professionally edited

Grenademan Vs Zombies is done.  Its book 3 out of 5 but I'm still publisihing it as a series in the new year alternating with Forever West.  Fiona Skye has done a fantastic job editing it.

I will be reading from it every other week in the podcast starting two saturday's from now, with short stories alternating after that.  Rereading it, its amazing how my first serious arc story (before I wrote it) of five parts works well.  Book 1, 3, 4, and 5 are all awesome.  I'm not sure about 2....its too close to 4....and I might just do it last or as an anthology of short stories at some point...rather than actually do it...but I do think I need to create a short novella of  Book 1 at least.

Regardless, its progress and MY what a difference an editor makes....

EXT – KENSINGTON RESEARCH FACILITY - DAY

Hawkqueen, Inoria and Grenademan all look out at a large chain link fence. Inoria puts a small portable staircase on the ground that raises up and allows the three heroes to rush up and then rush down it. The portable staircase dissolves into vapor.

HAWKQUEEN
Handy that.

INORIA
That's what it is designed to do.

GRENADEMAN
DO YOU HAVE AN
(interrupted)

INORIA
(interupting)
Shut up! Do you have to be so loud?!

GRENADEMAN
(using an only barely perceptible lower tone of voice)
WHY SHOULD I NOT BE LOUD?

INORIA
Are you stupid? So we don't alert the bad guys that we're coming.

GRENADEMAN
BUT THE FORCES OF GOOD ARE INDESTRUCTABLE.

INORIA
No they aren't.

GRENADEMAN
YES, THEY ARE.

What about people that aren't super heroes but are good, are they indestructible?

HAWKQUEEN
He was the most powerful metahuman on earth in his day. He was a hero. He fought crime through the twenties and thirties. He was last seen during WWII. Everyone thought he was dead.

INORIA
Maybe its some other guy.

HAWKQUEEN
True. Its not like its the first time we've run into someone taking up someone else's costume, but I think that this is different...

INORIA
The voice?

HAWKQUEEN
Yes. Its just so....him. You'd have to hear the old recordings.

INORIA
Well if it IS him, that would be kind of bad, wouldn't it?

HAWKQUEEN
What are you implying?

INORIA
We've taken on some pretty tough bad guys before, but nothing on the 'world's most powerful caliber'. Maybe we should call in some backup.

HAWKQUEEN
Maybe. Alert the police for now with a heads up. We're going to do some homework.

HAWKQUEEN
Alright then. Let's see what strangeness lurks in the mind of the man with the thumbtack head.

The video next to the device shows the earlier scene of the interrogation followed by scenes of the asylum. Very abbreviated.

HAWKQUEEN
That was horrible.

INORIA
Poor guy.

HAWKQUEEN
At least they didn't actually die.

INORIA
Enough to make him lose his marbles.

HAWKQUEEN
We need to find out what Thorne was actually up to. Anything in there that would give us any indications?

INORIA
None that I can tell.

HAWKQUEEN
Shadows....Doctor Shadows, can you believe it?

INORIA
Who is he?

HAWKQUEEN
Old Dead Guy. He wouldn't interest you.

INORIA
Obviously not so dead. Spill.
